Donald Trump says UK is in 'turmoil' and meeting Putin may be easier than going to Britain

Donald Trump says UK is in 'turmoil' and meeting Putin may be easier than going to BritainDonald Trump said the UK is in "turmoil" and his meeting with Vladimir Putin may be easier than his visit to see Theresa May. Mr Trump was speaking at the White House before setting out for the UK, a Nato summit in Brussels, and a meeting with Mr Putin in Helsinki. The US president called Boris Johnson a "friend" and indicated he may talk to the former Foreign Secretary in the UK. He said: "It's going to be an interesting time in the UK, and it's certainly going to be an interesting time with Nato. But we'll work it out and all countries will be happy. "The UK has a situation that's been going on for a long time. So I have Nato, I have the UK, which is in somewhat turmoil, and I have Putin. Frankly, Putin may be the easiest of them all who would think? Who would think? But the UK certainly they have a lot of things going on. "Boris Johnson is a friend of mine who has been very nice to me, very supportive and maybe we'll speak to him when I get over there. I like Boris Johnson I've always liked him." Asked if Mrs May would "remain in power" he said: "That's up to the people. I get along with her very well, have a very good relationship, that's certainly up to the people not up to me." Asked if he had spoken to Mrs May the president said: "I have not.No, I have not." "We're being taken advantage of by the European Union we lost $151 billion last year on trade. "And on top of that we spend at least 70 per cent for Nato and frankly it helps them a lot more than us, so we'll see what happens. We have a long beautiful week." He said he regarded Russia as a "competitor". He added: Getting along with Russia, China, others, is a good thing, not a bad thing, I've said that for years. "We're meeting with Vladimir Putin on Monday, we'll see how that goes." Donald Trump on his upcoming UK visit Mr Trump said the announcement of his nomination for the Supreme Court last night had received "rave reviews from both sides". Mr Trump was asked if Mike Pompeo, his secretary of state, had actually delivered a copy of Elton John's 1972 album Honky Chateau to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his recent visit to Pyongyang. The album contains the song "Rocket Man," a familiar tune at Trump rallies and a title the president famously used to describe Kim.  Mr Trump said: "They didn't give it. I have it for him. They didn't give it. But it will be given at a different period. I actually do have a little gift for him, but you'll find out what that gift is when I give it."
